Types of Type K Thermocouple Cables:

1. Extension Grade Cable:

   • Used to extend the thermocouple signal over longer distances.

   • Suitable for lower-temperature environments (up to 90°C or 194°F).

   • Less expensive than compensation grade cable.

2. Compensation Grade Cable:

   • Made with conductors that closely match the thermocouple alloy.

   • Used in environments where high accuracy is required, especially over longer distances.

   • Can handle higher temperatures (up to 200°C or 392°F). 

Key Features of Type K Thermocouple Cable:

1. Conductor Material:

   • The positive leg (Chromel) is made of Nickel-Chromium (Ni-Cr).

   • The negative leg (Alumel) is made of Nickel-Aluminum (Ni-Al).

2. Temperature Range:

   • Extension Grade Cable: Typically rated for temperatures up to 90°C (194°F).

   • Compensation Grade Cable: Can handle higher temperatures, often up to 200°C (392°F) or more, depending on the insulation material.

3. Insulation:

   • Common insulation materials include PVC, fiberglass, Teflon (PTFE), and PFA. The choice depends on the operating temperature and environmental conditions.

   • For high-temperature applications, fiberglass or Teflon insulation is often used.

4. Color Coding:

   • According to international standards (IEC 60584), Type K thermocouple cables are color-coded:

     • Positive leg (Chromel): Green

     • Negative leg (Alumel): White

   • The outer jacket is typically green for easy identification.

5. Shielding:

   • Many Type K cables include shielding (e.g., braided or foil) to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and ensure accurate signal transmission.

6. Jacket:

   • The outer jacket provides additional protection against abrasion, chemicals, and moisture. Common jacket materials include PVC, Teflon, and silicone.
     
     

     PT100 Cable Requirements

     Since PT100 sensors rely on resistance measurement, the connecting cable must:

   • Use Correct Wire Configuration

     • 2-wire: Cheapest but least accurate (lead resistance affects readings).

     • 3-wire: Most common (compensates for lead resistance).

     • 4-wire: Highest accuracy (eliminates lead resistance errors).

   • Material

     • Typically copper or nickel leads (not thermocouple alloys).

     • Must have low resistance and good insulation.

   • Shielding

     • Shielded twisted pairs help reduce electrical noise.

   • Insulation
